The Rebarreling Process

We approach each rebarreling project the same way we do our custom ultrarifled barrels. Starting with our premium quality barrel blanks bored to exacting specifications, we work diligently to match the specifications outlined in your order or replicate the original barrel should you choose to provide it. Our machinists use the same unique precision machining techniques, including non-subtractive carbide push-button rifling, to generate a barrel that far surpasses the quality and performance of the original factory barrel. All barrels undergo complete inspection and testing procedures to ensure no defects are present. We meticulously machine each barrel to the specific contours and barrel lengths and add threading and chambering to limit the additional work you or a qualified gunsmith may need to complete upon receiving the finished product.

No Shortcuts

We still follow the same manufacturing process as founder G.R. Douglas laid out with each barrel made by detailed craftsmen. This process has been further enhanced with new modern CNC machines, lathes, and supplemental manufacturing equipment to bridge the gap between age-old craftsmanship and modernized production.

Carbide Push-button Rifling

Rather than use subtractive machining techniques, Douglas Barrel depends on in-house fabricated precision carbide buttons to create incredibly accurate bore dimensions and rifling within the gun barrel. This manufacturing method creates the most uniform and precise rifling available in the industry.

Barrel Stability

Douglas Barrels does not apply any supplementary straightening methods to our barrels. We prefer to maintain our drilling and reaming tolerances as tight as possible to achieve the straightest bores possible. With over seventy years of experience, we’ve yet to find a better method to ensure a stable barrel during firing.

Premium Quality Inspection

All barrels are inspected by ultraviolet Magnaflux methods to ensure no defects are present that may impact barrel quality or performance. As not all defects are readily visible to the naked eye, Magnaflux testing indicates any problem areas in the barrel that may prevent our machinists from achieving air-gauged quality during the manufacturing process.

Air Gauge Testing

Air gauge testing is an innovative way of measuring the bore caliber to measurements to the thousandth of an inch. The air gauge measures the displaced air within the barrel against the desired caliber size to ensure uniform diameters or possible inconsistencies along the complete length. All Douglas Barrels must air gauge within .0002” of the desired diameter to attain the ultrarifled designation.
